Lean Body Mass Calculator: Choose The Best Tool To Calculate Your Lean Body Mass

Welcome to Allcalculator.net, your go-to resource for all your body composition calculations! With our Body Mass Calculator, you can accurately calculate your lean body mass based on your gender, body weight, and height. Understanding your lean body mass is crucial, as fitness trainers and bodybuilders often emphasize maintaining a constant level of LBM while focusing on reducing body fat. It's important to note that the proportions of muscle and fat in the body can vary due to various factors, including exercise volume, dietary habits, physical health status, and hormones. To ensure accurate results, our calculator utilizes four different formulas, carefully selected to provide you with the most reliable data. Trust Allcalculator.net for all your body composition calculations!

Formulas for calculating Lean Body Mass

Boer Formula

Male: Lean Body Mass (kg) = (0.407 * Weight [kg]) + (0.267 * height[cm]) – 19.2
Female: Lean Body Mass (kg) = (0.252 * Weight[kg]) + (0.473 * height[cm]) – 48.3

Hume Formula

Male: Lean Body Mass (kg) = (0.32810 * Weight [kg]) + (0.33929 * height[cm]) – 29.5336
Female: Lean Body Mass (kg) = (0.29569 * Weight[kg]) + (0.41813 * height[cm]) – 43.2933

James Formula

Male: Lean Body Mass (kg) = (1.1 * Weight [kg]) – 128 * (Weight[kg] / height[cm])2
Female: Lean Body Mass (kg) = (1.07 * Weight[kg]) – 148 * (Weight[kg] / height[cm])2

Peters Formula

This formula is used for children aged 13-14 years old or younger.
eECV (extracellular volume) = 0.0215.W^0.6469.H^0.7236
eLBM = 3.8.eECV

Good lean body mass!

Women possess more body fat than men, as the same in BMI. On average, women would have a lean body mass between 69-75%, while men's lean body mass is between 76-82%.
Lean body mass ranges from 60-90% of their body weight. Women having a lean body mass percentage lower than 68% are considered unhealthy. Same for a man with a lean body mass percentage lower than 75% is considered unhealthy.
Athletes are doing workouts to build their muscles can have a lean body mass percentage range between 84-94% for men and 81-91% for women.

Use of Lean Body Mass Calculator!

Is an effective tool that determines your lean body mass. You need to follow some steps to calculate your LBM are:

  • Enter your weight in the imperial or metric system, which the calculator supports
  • Enter your age
  • Measure and enter your height
  • Measure your neck, waist, and hips.
  • Enter all the above measurements in the calculator and click on the calculate button to get an exact result.

How to measure lean body mass?

The above formulas are used only in the to estimate an LBM. There are several inexpensive options available to measure your body composition are:

  • DEXA Scan
  • Bioimpedance analysis
  • Air displacement plethysmography
  • Skinfold measure (callipers)

DEXA Scan

DEXA Scan refers to Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. This method is harmless low-energy x-rays that pass through your body and measure how much fat and bone are inside your body. These scans are more affordable and accessible as they also provide a reliable way of tracking and trending your body composition over time.

Bioimpedance analysis

Bioimpedance analysis is popular in gyms which is a Meta scale or placing electrodes on two parts of the body and passing an electric current through your body. This device measures the body's resistance to the current and correctly estimates total body water. Finally, your lean and fat mass is extrapolated in this number. It has some limitations: if you are dehydrated or over-hydrated, it can skew the results.

Air displacement plethysmography

Air displacement plethysmography, as the name implies, uses air displacement to estimate body composition. This technology is used in Bod-Pod, common in clinics and university research.
Skinfold measure (callipers)
Skinfold calliper is used to measure Skinfold thickness which is extrapolated to estimate total body composition. This method is a quick and easy field measure, but the protocol must be strictly followed to ensure reliability.

Some other body composition methods are Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, which is used to assess body composition. Both are powerful machines that are used only in clinical and research settings.
